There were 33 people in the study aged 55 to 75 years and were divided into two groups. The first group played the game Super Mario 64 and the other was the first to learn the piano. In the end, positive effects were observed only in those members of the group who played a popular game
The study showed that people who played the Super Mario 64 game for only two months had a lot more episodic and spatial memory than those who "trained" on two-dimensional games or learned to play the piano.
This two-month play of 3D Super Mario games can improve brain capacity and help prevent dementia, both in older people and young adults, according to Canadian scientists.
Research leader, Professor Gregory West, hopes that these discoveries could be used to discover new ways to protect older people from dementia. 3D games stimulate the hippocampus to create a mental image of a virtual environment. "A number of previous studies suggest that just brain stimulation increases functional activity and side substance in that part of the brain," said prof. West.
